We live in a small house. 1,100 square feet, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Well; ask me that in a couple of years when I’ve added to my brood and we have converted the garage into more living space…
That’s the thing about kids. They need room to play and they come with lots of “stuff.” Even when DH and I take the minimalist approach to child-rearing and “stuff-having,” we have still ended up with more “stuff” than we’d like. I am that weekly purger who is constantly sending little bits off to the thrift store because I don’t like clutter about.
My philosophy on clutter is that it wastes time and energy, being shuffled about, looked after, and constantly cleaned up. And– it bugs me. If something can’t find a permanent “home” in our house and does not serve multiple purposes, I do not want it around. There are of course exceptions; like how I don’t even go into the garage anymore. That is enemy territory 🙂
So, space is at a premium, and I am always looking for ways to organize and de-clutter the house. I want to utilize my small space as best as possible, but I want it to be aesthetically pleasing too. In bringing in more stuff for my little one, and baby-proofing, some things have been displaced, purged or shuffled. Like my hat and scarf rack…
Living in the PNW, I have a lot of scarves. They are a rain shield, a removable layer for warmth, a baby blanket, a water-bottle holder, a napkin, a spit-up cover, a nursing cover, a baby toy and (gasp!), a fashion accessory. That is how I “justify” having a few scarves around. When I say around, I really mean it, because in the colder months of heavy use they end up everywhere.
I figured out a super easy way to organize them, as well as my husband’s ties, (and perhaps my bras too), and it only took a second to make. All you need is some shower curtain rings and a hanger!
Load the shower curtain rings on to the hanger and your done! It was waaaaaaay too easy 🙂
Once you get it loaded up with scarves, the textiles all look so beautiful together! I actually hang mine on the outside of our coat closet near the front door. It reminds me to grab a scarf, and it adds some color and pizzazz to a plain white door. I am not an interior decorating specialist, so this type of decoration looks good to me 🙂
What types of things have you come up with to organize and de-clutter your house?
Can you think of anything else to hang on this rack?

Thanks, Jo! I will totally pin you 🙂 That’s a great idea!
Great Idea! I do something like this for belts. Screw in little hooks to a wooden hanger and hang your belts from the metal ring 🙂 The blog’s looking great Jerica!
Thanks, Suz! And what a great idea for belts! I have a ton of those little hooks because they were only sold in a big box. Glad to have a use for them 🙂
This past winter I got a little obsessed with scarves and ended up with a big collection! I was just sloppily hanging them on a hanger. This method lets me access each one individually and keeps it all organized! Thanks for the great idea & linking up to Frugal Crafty Home!
Thanks for hosting! I’m glad you liked it 🙂
this is such a simple but great idea thanks 🙂
You are welcome, Heather! 🙂
I love this idea America.
Love this
Great tip, I’ve been looking for a better way to organize all my scarves (right now tossed in a jumble over a hanger)! I’d love it if you’d consider sharing this on my blog’s link party, Waste Not Want Not Wednesday 🙂
Thanks for the invite, Danielle! I’ll check it out 😉
Great idea. Thanks!
I love this! I have them on a hanger now. Will be getting shower curtain rings TOMORROW! 🙂 Oh, and I pinned this too!
